Get an Eye Exam This Fall
During fall, it’s important to get your regular eye exam. During your annual exam, your doctor will help you determine if you need to take corrective actions to alleviate dry eyes, itchy eyes, or other eye concerns related to the season.
Fall is associated with chronic dry eyes. It’s also a time of year when mold, pet dander, and pollen from trees gets kicked up into the air due to wind. During fall, we tend to spend more time indoors, especially when the weather is cooler. This means that allergens get trapped inside with us.
Fall is the perfect time to see your eye doctor and put a plan in place for good eye care. He or she will help you with artificial tears, if you need them. And, your doctor can offer suggestions to remedy specific eye troubles that you may be experiencing.
Keep a Humidifier Indoors
Cool fall air outside brings many people indoors. They often turn on the heat in their homes and offices, which leads to inside environments that can dry out eyes. During fall, make sure you use a humidifier inside. The best humidifiers will moisten air and your eyes, and they’ll also filter irritants and allergens from the air.
Wear Sunglasses and Brimmed Hats
Wearing sunglasses and brimmed hats outside will help keep dry wind and allergens out of your yes. Put glasses and hats on, even when you don’t think you’ll need them. It doesn’t take super gusty winds to irritate eyes. Even mild breezes blow pollen and pollutants around.
Carry Eye Lubricants With You
If you wear contacts, or if you consistently get dry eyes, carry a bottle of eye drops with you. During fall, you may need to moisten eyes regularly throughout the day. While this is normal, see your eye doctor if you feel that you’re having to lubricate all the time.
Choose Hypoallergenic Eye Makeup
If you wear makeup, then you’ll want to make sure it’s hypoallergenic. Because fall presents new seasonal weather challenges like increased wind and new pollens, makeup can end up in your eyes in a couple of different ways. Wind may blow powdered makeup directly into your eyes, or it may cause you to rub your eyes and push makeup inside of them. Look for natural, irritant-free makeups, or choose ophthalmologist-tested varieties.
These are just a few of the things you can do to combat itchy eyes and allergy season, and to practice good eye care during allergy season. For more tips and tricks, visit your eye doctor for your annual exam.
