My Glasses Are So Dirty! What’s Should I Do?
Whether your glasses are old or new, it’s very important to be able to always work hard to keep them clean. Dirty eyeglasses impair your vision and some of the dirt, debris, or bacteria that collects on the lenses could even get into your eyes.
But how can you safely clean your eyeglasses? What is the best way to get them as clean as possible without risking damaging them? Read on to learn the best way to keep your eye glasses sparkling clear and new!
How to Clean Your Glasses
Before you start the cleaning process, make sure to fully wash your hands with soap and water, just as you would if you were putting in contact lenses. This will help you avoid adding oils or dirt from your hands to the lenses while you are trying to clean them.
With your hands clean, rinse the glasses off under the tap. Use a light flow of water so as not to damage the lenses through impact, and be sure to use lukewarm water, as hot water could damage the lens coating.
Once you have rinsed off all the dirt and debris you can with the water, apply a small drop of dishwashing liquid to each lens. Make sure not to use a dishwashing liquid that includes moisturizers or lotions for the hands. Rub the entirety of the lenses on both sides as well as the frame with the dishwashing liquid. When complete, be sure to rinse off all the soap.
Finally, shake the water off the lenses, make sure they are clean, and use a lint-free towel to clean them off, such as a clean cotton towel.
What About Eyeglass-Cleaning Products?
The above method should be all you need to get your eyeglass lenses perfectly clean. However, if you want to use eyeglass-cleaning products, you can. Useful products can include pre-moistened disposable wipes for eyeglass lenses. Don’t use standard wipes or baby wipes. Use those specifically designed for glasses.
You can also use professional spray cleaners for eyeglasses with microfiber cleaning cloths. However, if your glasses have anti-reflective coating, make sure the cleaner is approved for use with these types of lenses.
Protecting Your Eyeglass Lenses
When you are done cleaning your glasses and when you are not using them, be sure that you keep them in their protective case. It is important to take all these methods to avoid scratching your lenses, because once you scratch them, they are scratched for good.
Once your eye glass lenses are scratched, the best thing to do is to buy new lenses. First, because the scratch will probably interfere with your vision, and second, because the scratch compromises the integrity of the lens, which makes it more likely that the lens could shatter.
If you are worried about scratching, you can look for lenses that have a scratch-resistant coating. You can also look into a warranty that protects you in the case of scratched lenses.
