With countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, U.K., Norway, Italy, Germany and Denmark participating this year, the World Sight Day Challenge will continue beyond the normally scheduled day. For the event every year, fund raising and a renewed emphasis on eyecare awareness becomes the challenge of literally thousands of optometrists, opticians, students, ophthalmic companies and more.

And based on a recent press release distributed by Optometry Giving Sight, 2013 activities will continue past the official World Sight Day, recognized internationally as October 10.

This year’s event day saw over eight hundred eye-related facilities in North America alone wearing World Sight Day t-shirts and wristbands, as part of the drive to raise awareness. Some facilities (like Atlanta’s VSP Global) went as far as offering eye care services and eye wear to over four thousand patients.

As part of the World Sight Day Challenge Coalition, twelve leading industry partners worked to elevate issues such as visibility, eyecare awareness, and raised funds within their ranks among company employees.

Some companies like CooperVision deserve applause for raising almost $40,000 from its various offices located all around the world. In addition, more than fifty companies in the United States are also promoting specific products, performing fundraising, and having sight celebration events at their stores and offices.

Almost all schools of optometry in the U.S. also made the effort for this year’s World Sight Day Challenge, bringing students in on the action to eliminate avoidable blindness and impaired vision all over the world.

The World Sight Day Challenge raises funds to address avoidable blindness caused by uncorrected refractive error. For more information, visit www.givingsight.org.
