January Is National Eye Care & Glaucoma Awareness Month

Starting the Year Off Right for Your Eyes

January is National Eye Care Month

January is a big month for your eyes, given the fact that it’s both National Eye Care AND Glaucoma Awareness month. What does that mean? Well, according to the National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute, “More than four million people in the United States have glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve and destroy eyesight. Unfortunately, nearly half of those with glaucoma are not even aware that they have it.”

Which brings us to the “awareness” aspect of the month — making sure you get regular, annual and comprehensive eye examinations from a licensed optometrist is the only way to ensure that you discover early signs of damaging eye conditions like glaucoma. With early detection, prevention and treatment options have greater chances of being met with success.

Because a condition like glaucoma can have few to no early warning signs, the only really effective measure against blindness is early detection. And early detection isn’t something you can do on your own — instead, a comprehensive eye examination involving dilation of the eyes represents your best defense against glaucoma.

Are you one of them? You owe it to yourself to find out by getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam that includes having drops put in your eye. With its painless and gradual loss of vision, glaucoma may have no early warning signs, but it can be detected during a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

January is here, and it’s National Eye Care month. Make sure to take advantage of the opportunity, and call to schedule a comprehensive eye examination today at Beaumont Vision.
