Daily Eye Health Is Key: Your Vision Depends on It
Unfortunately, our eye health is often one of those things we take for granted – until, that is, there is a problem with our vision. However, when a problem does arise, it may be too late. Because of this, we should be thinking about how to take care of our eyes every day. With that in mind, here are ten simple things you can do each day for better eye health.
1. Follow the 20/20/20 rule
One of the major causes of eyestrain is excessive screen use. In modern society, it is extremely difficult notto spend most of your day looking at screens. To minimize eyestrain, remember the 20/20/20 rule and look 20 feet away from your screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
2. Quit smoking
In addition to the obvious issue of smoke getting in your eyes, smoking can constrict blood vessels and cause other health problems that can lead to impaired vision.
3. Eat more fruits and vegetables
Often the steps you take for overall good health will have an effect on eye health as well. Fruits and vegetables have the nutrients you need to help you see better and keep your eyes healthier.
4. Control your diet
On the other side of the coin, health-related conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol that come from a poor diet can also lead to poor eyesight or even blindness.
5. Wear sunglasses
Whenever you are outside during the day, wear sunglasses that protect from both UVA and UVB radiation. Ultraviolet rays can damage your eyes even when it is cloudy outside.
6. Wear your glasses
If your doctor has prescribed glasses, use them for whatever their intended purpose is. Don’t forget them at home, and don’t try to go along without them. Trying to overcome your eye problem without your glasses can lead to headaches, stress, and more problems with your eyesight.
7. Clean your contact lenses
If you wear contact lenses, make sure you keep them clean and clear of debris. You’ll see better and you won’t risk infecting or damaging your eyes with contaminants that should not be on your lenses. If your lenses are not designed for overnight wear, be sure to take them out before you go to sleep.
8. Pay attention to your eyes
If you think you are having problems with your eyes, then it is highly likely that you are. In other words, if you are having trouble seeing, don’t ignore the problem. The sooner you address an eye issue, the better your chances are for recovery. Make an eye doctor appointment right away.
9. Wear sport goggles
If you participate in sports on a regular basis, make sure you wear goggles. One stray shot from an errant ball or catching an opponent’s finger or elbow in your eye could mean permanent damage.
10. Know when your next eye appointment is and keep it.
You should always be aware how long it has been since your last eye exam, and never go too long without having your eyes looked at as part of a comprehensive eye examination. You may not recognize subtle changes to your eyesight that could require some correction or treatment, and you want to address those small problems before they become bigger eye health issues.
