Take Care of Your Eyes This Summer
With warmer weather just around the corner, it’s exciting to start planning all of the adventures that you will take with your family and friends during the summer season.
Whether you are hoping to take a tropical beach vacation, hone in on your backhand in tennis, get in shape for that serious hike you’ve been hankering to do, or just hang out poolside, the summer sun is something that you should take into consideration too when it comes to the health of your eyes.
Don’t Underestimate the Potential for Sun Damage
It’s important to keep in mind the sun’s strength so that you can keep yourself protected as you enjoy the warmth and good weather, and the eyes are no exception. Eyes are often forgotten when it comes to protection from the sun, and it happens for a variety of reasons.
Because they are small or because we’re so busy protecting our skin from UV rays, it’s easy to forget how susceptible our eyes are to the sun’s damaging rays. But fear not! There are many ways to protect your eyes this summer, so take the time to ensure that one of the most fragile and sensitive parts of your body gets the sun defense it deserves!
Lather Sunscreen
Although it may seem like the most obvious way to protect your skin from the sun, many people forget to lather sunscreen on their eyelids. Because the eyelid is so sensitive, it can be uncomfortable to have sunscreen on your eyes.
But instead of refraining from broad-spectrum protection all together, just opt for a sensitive skin sunscreen or an eye cream with SPF protection. You can find moisturizers and eye creams with SPF at local drug stores and department store makeup counters.
Take Advantage of Sunhats and Baseball Caps
Another great way to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays is to wear a cap or hat with a brim that blocks the sun. Not only do sun hats look festive and summery, but they also partake in the important job of keeping your eyes and face out of the sun. Look for hats with an SPF for an extra layer of protection – it’s true! They do make them these days!
Wear Sunglasses to Protect Your Eyes From the Sun
Like a sunhat or baseball cap, sunglasses do double duty by protecting your eyes while also giving you a carefree summer look. Make sure your sunglasses have full UV (ultraviolet) protection; this means that they will protect your eyes from dangerous UV-A rays and UV-B rays.
Seek Shade As Often As You Can
The sun is at its peak intensity between the hours of 10am and 4pm, so during this window of time, make sure you are giving your eyes and skin a break by stepping into the shade throughout the day. Spending some time in the shade during the sun’s most intense hours will give both your eyes and skin a break – and while you’re at it, remember to hydrate throughout the day, too!
Look After Your Eyes This Summer!
As you partake in this season’s summer fun, remember to look after your eyes, so they can continue to look onto the world and enjoy the season. These tips may seem obvious, but even these small measures will do wonders, and your eyes will thank you.
